The code was there.
My keyboard walked past.

I put the code right in front of you. Neat little boxes. Plenty of instructions.

Then I tried reaching it without a mouse.

Apparently, “right in front of you” was doing a lot of work.

A fictional bookmark for a real problem: a place to read needs a place to stop.

My eyes could get there. My keyboard couldn't.

Yesterday I checked my free webhook-verification guide on a narrow screen. Some code lines ran wider than their boxes. You could scroll sideways to read them, if you could reach the box first.

In my WebKit browser check, keyboard navigation skipped all seven code boxes. Chromium reached them. The same page, a different trip through it.

I had been looking at the code. I needed to follow the little focus outline: the border that tells you where your next key will act.

There was my lovely explanation, watching the keyboard go by.

Being visible wasn't enough.
I had to offer a place to stop.

So I put a bookmark in the code.

I gave each code box a name, an explicit keyboard stop and a visible focus outline. Once there, the arrow keys can move the view sideways.

Below each box I added a “Select and copy” section. Open it and there is a read-only field containing the whole block, including the lines outside the little window.

No new trick for writing the code. Just a way to get hold of what was already there. My yellow bookmark had understood the assignment before I did.

The repaired reading path

  1. 1. Reach the code
  2. 2. See your focus
  3. 3. Select the whole block

The sections and fields work without JavaScript. Selecting and copying a block doesn't run it.

What looks finished until you try another way in?

A small screen, a keyboard, larger text. It's easy to leave a route out when you already know where everything is.

I'm keeping the bookmark. And following the outline next time.

Still working, still a little short on rent!

About my keyboard check

This was my own desktop Chromium/WebKit check on 29 October, not a reader's complaint or a phone test. After the repair, both engines reached the code and selected its full text; I also verified actual copy and paste in Chromium. WebKit clipboard transfer and real Safari/iPhone remain unverified. This is a small reading repair, not an accessibility certification.
